Transit Systems Redesigns

Orange County, NY

As part of a transit planning and operations on-call, Transpo led the development and analysis of Transit Orange’s services in the Middletown and Newburgh service areas in Orange County, New York. Using innovative analytical tools, Transpo redesigned the local service plan to improve fixed route services, passenger travel times, and fleet utilization. The plan also reimagined how passengers accessed transportation and moved within their communities through microtransit recommendations.

Electric Vehicle Feasibility Analysis

Jefferson Transit Authority (JTA)

Transpo assisted JTA in assessing the feasibility of transitioning their bus system to electric buses. Through detailed analysis, Transpo evaluated energy storage requirements, costs, and infrastructure upgrades, all while striving for a greener, more sustainable transportation solution. Finally, Transpo determined the total expected savings in greenhouse gas emissions from operating a fully electric fleet compared to the existing diesel fleet.

On-Call Transportation Planning Services

Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA)

Transpo provides on-call service to WTA, with recent tasks including a Zero Emissions Transition Plan, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor Study, Cross County Paratransit Study, Bellingham Station Visioning Study which included interactive workshops, a Microtransit Study, and a Renewable Diesel Study.

WSDOT Intercity Bus Plan

Transpo is working with WSDOT to update its Intercity Bus Plan. The updated plan will identify potential service expansions and enhancements to link rural areas and restore meaningful connections to the existing intercity network. Transpo efforts included gathering and organizing existing intercity bus route data from private and public operators to create a comprehensive statewide intercity bus map, interviewing intercity bus operators to identify industry challenges and understand future opportunities for change, collecting operational data for analysis, evaluating existing intercity bus connections to determine how well they interact with regional and local services, and assessing travel demand and system gaps.

Ulster County Human Service Transportation Plan (HSTP)

Transpo recently updated the Ulster County MPO’s Human Service Transportation Plan (HSTP). As a 5310-program recipient, Ulster County maintains and updates its HSTP every four years. As part of this effort, Transpo developed a comprehensive understanding of Ulster County’s changing mobility needs through a robust public engagement effort and data analytics program, using datasets such as Replica to identify the origin-destination patterns of multiple mobility-needy populations. Transpo developed recommendations to improve transit accessibility, increase efficiency, and expand coverage to older adults and people with disabilities. The plan includes efforts to pioneer the use of microtransit and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) concepts to improve geographic coverage, maximize resources, and foster long-term solutions for equitable transportation access.

Macatawa Area Transit (MAX) Service Restoration and Redesign

Transpo led MAX’s first major service revision in over 15 years. To redesign the fixed route and demand-response services, and to incorporate microtransit services, Transpo conducted extensive public outreach in coordination with MAX staff and a local engagement firm, analyzed current and planned/forecasted land use, employment and population characteristics, and completed a comprehensive evaluation that included service performance, operations, technology, and comparison to local and national peer agencies. The final study included a cost-neutral, redesigned fixed route network with increased frequency and recommendations for service policy and program changes.
