Agency budgets are being squeezed by many factors, but many still have a goal of improving the safety, connectivity, and accessibility of multimodal transportation systems. By maintaining a focus on the goals the community desires, a wider range of lower cost solutions are available. Transpo and our staff have assisted several agencies successfully implement a range of projects that enhance safety, improve connectivity, and are accessible to vulnerable users, at a fraction of the cost of typical projects. Low cost, high impact projects are quicker and easier to design and implement. Design typically takes just a few weeks and is accomplished with a more practical approach to developing plans. Installation frequently uses materials that in-house maintenance forces or small works roster contractors can install in a matter of weeks, compared to the months of a typical bid project.
In this webinar, Transpo will provide guidance for identifying when a low cost, high impact approach is appropriate. We will touch on the design process, typical concerns and strategies to get everyone “on board” with the low cost high impact concept. We’ll describe and show several examples from a wide range of agencies that Transpo and our staff have designed and have helped implement, using grant funds, local funds, and local forces, for several of our clients, ranging from small suburban communities to large urban areas.
