Auburn M Street Roadway Improvements
|
M Street SE in Auburn from 37th Street SE to 29th Street SE was in need of significant surface reconstruction, pedestrian enhancements, and new storm drainage. This federally-funded project included replacing the existing roadway pavement, constructing a new storm drainage system, and designing pedestrian improvements and traffic calming to safely link neighborhoods to the adjacent elementary school.
Transpo’s design team performed conceptual design and final engineering; geotechnical engineering and pavement design; prepared NEPA environmental documentation; and prepared final construction documents for a total of approximately 2,200 linear feet of roadway improvements. The project gave special consideration to designing a safe and visible mid-block pedestrian crossing at a school-zone location that incorporated a speed-table and printed asphalt for enhanced visibility and traffic calming. It was also required to minimize design profile modifications to maintain existing driveways and avoid right-of-way impacts.
The project team received a signed Documented Categorical Exclusion (DCE) for the M Street Improvements project. WSDOT Highways and Local Programs’ project engineer was able to sign the completed Environmental Classifications Summary (with supporting documentation) upon initial review – no comment cycle was required. The project also required a specially detailed storm drainage design around numerous existing underground utilities. The project was ultimately constructed with no significant modification to the storm drainage system as-designed. |
