I-90 ITS Corridor Concept of Operation |
Transpo recently completed an ITS system study from Idaho/Washington state line to Coeur d’Alene. The work was coordinated with the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center, and Cities of Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls. The objective of the I-90 ITS Corridor Plan was to identify and develop feasible technology based solutions / projects to improve mobility and safety along the Corridor. Transpo prepared this Plan for ITD to document its current ITS infrastructure, determine future needs, enhance project implementation and develop a concept of operations framework to help facilitate a hierarchal network between the state and local agencies within the corridor.
The project outlined potential operational scenarios that might occur along the I-90 Corridor. These operational scenarios will give a general sense of regional communication involved in events such as a traffic incident or road closure due to weather. The plan covers CCTV deployment considerations as follows: Determine preliminary camera site locations; evaluate/define system functionality; communication availability, requirement and topology; video compression options; and traffic management center requirements and considerations. Transpo is now continuing with the first project outlined in our study by implementing deployment of ITS equipment that from the Interstate up to the City of Hayden city limits. We are also analyzing signal system optimization software to improve overall traffic flow.
