I-710 Elevated Utility Corridor Conceptual Design

I-710 Port of Long Beach Freight

Client:

Mark Thomas Co.

Owner:

Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Location:

Long Beach, CA

As part of a team, Transpo is leading the research and conceptual design for proposed automated cargo conveyance solutions for the Los Angeles MTA.  The design will be used to inform the Advanced Planning Studies and Preliminary Type Selection for the I-710 Utility Corridor Improvements.

Freight conveyance systems are a new solution in the US that have yet to be taken beyond conceptual design. Transpo is focusing on the technology requirements for each solution, integrating the technology into the functional needs of the conveyance structure and analyzing the impact to MTA’s right-of-way.  The conceptual designs for the elevated freight corridor consider the potential for automated movement of containers and/or trucks. Because there are many types of technologies that could propel containers along the  corridor and control the cargo being moved, Transpo is preparing a recommendation for the ideal mix of solutions.

The infrastructure considers requirements for electrical components including overhead wiring and equipment, magnetic-levitation operations systems, Connected-Vehicle systems utilizing Dedicated Short Range Communication, and Automated Vehicle Location.

Once complete, Transpo will lead a workshop where vendors will present their solutions to a group of regional stakeholders including Caltrans, MTA, the Ports, the Gateway Cities Council of Governments and private shippers.
